Deep tissue treatments
Deep tissue treatments use specific massage techniques to reduce pain through a deeper focus on the muscles, skin, tendons, ligaments and the fascia which surrounds the muscles. Treatments often focus on areas or groups of muscles to ensure not only the affected muscle, but those overworked through compensation, are addressed to ensure maximum benefit.
There are many causes of pain, but the pain producers that massage may benefit include:
- restricted blood flow (caused by tight, constricted muscles)
- build up of toxins and waste in the muscles
- nerve entrapment or compression (massage may assist if entrapment is caused by constricted muscles)
- postural issues
- emotional stress
By using deep tissue techniques to work the muscles, blood flow is increased to the area, bringing with it nutrients and oxygen to assist in function and repair. Increased blood flow aids in the release of toxins which are freed from the muscle and moved on to be eliminated from the body, so it is important to drink plenty of water after any massage, particularly a deep-tissue treatment.
Another way massage can address pain and muscle tension is through trigger point therapy, which may be incorporated into a deep tissue treatment. Trigger points are small, sensitive areas that can be painful or cause referred pain elsewhere in the body and are areas where wastes accumulate.
Trigger points can be quite sensitive when active, and because everyone's threshold is different, we will always work within your comfort levels and check the intensity of compressions when treating trigger points or performing deep tissue techniques.
Several treatments may be required before long-term improvement is felt and lime & myrtle can discuss an ongoing treatment plan to meet your needs.
